Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences

Clinical Practicum & MLT Scientist Training

Integrating academic biomedical curriculum with authentic clinical laboratory training on Beckman Coulter diagnostic instrumentation at ECUSTA Higher Learning Institute.

Teaching Laboratory Mandate

Bridging Rigorous Scientific Theory and Clinical Benchwork

At ECUSTA Higher Learning Institute, our Medical Laboratory Technology (BSc-MLS) undergraduates do not merely observe laboratory operations from behind observation windows. Under direct supervision of certified faculty and senior clinical technologists, students perform specimen preparation, reagent reconstitution, automated analyzer calibration, and Levey-Jennings quality control tracking.

Critically, all student practicum sessions are conducted in physically separated training bays using validated non-clinical quality-control matrix samples. No student accesses, operates on, or produces results from real hospital patient specimens.

“Our graduates do not simply read instruments. They understand the biochemical principles, calibrate the optics, interrogate analytical flags, and stand behind every result they verify.”

Critical Safety Boundary & Patient Privacy

Student–Clinical Separation Policy

All ECUSTA MLT student practicum activities are conducted exclusively using non-clinical QC matrix samples, proficiency standards, and validated reference materials. Students are never given access to live hospital patient specimens, patient identifiers, or real diagnostic reports. Dedicated student teaching benches are physically and systemically isolated from the clinical reference bench environment.

  • Student practice runs and calibration exercises are never released as clinical reports
  • Clinical laboratory bench areas require certified technologist authorization at all times
  • All senior undergraduate thesis specimens are governed by ECUSTA Institutional Review Board (IRB) clearance
